Come join us for a morning in trail stewardship with the Mt. Sutro Stewards, a non-profit organization whose mission is to build community, connect people with nature, and protect and enhance the Mount Sutro Open Space Reserve, one of the city’s wildest and most beautiful green spaces. They do this by working with volunteers to develop and maintain multi-use trails on Mt. Sutro, in partnership with UCSF & SF Recreation and Parks, while also conserving habitat for locally native plants and wildlife.

The Mount Sutro Open Space, located in the geographic center of San Francisco, was overlooked by the surrounding communities for a century. In the last decade, the true value of the open space has been revealed through the Sutro Stewards’ creation of multi-use trails, allowing the public to explore this exceptional place.

The typical activities include brushing, trail maintenance or invasive species removal, HOWEVER, the current focus is a very unique trail project. The Stewards are rebuilding the North Ridge trail from scratch. Previous years’ winter storms resulted in a need to clear the entire hillside of fallen Eucalyptus trees. We’re now rebuilding the entire trail, while UCSF staff are replanting native trees.

WHAT TO BRING & EXPECT
– Bring layers and work clothes & boots (You’ll very likely get dirt on your clothes)
– Bring a water bottle (to stay hydrated, as the nearest water fountain is a 5-10 minute walk from the worksite)
– Bring work gloves, if you have them, otherwise they provide them
– Bring an appetite (After we wrap for the day, we meet over a stack of pizzas and beverages to debrief on the work we did as groups)

Free pizza lunch after the program!

Amos Cruz (Western Samoa, 2004-2008) is a regular volunteer there and will be there to get you setup. Please reach out via email, [email protected], if you have any questions.
