In November 2022, the NorCalPCA Grants Program gave $4865.00 to purchase 30 beds for internally displaced people (IDPs) in Kalush, Ukraine. NorCal RPCV Patricia Deignan (Community Development, Kalush, Ukraine, 2017-19) worked with her friend, Mariana Dumenko, to help provide these beds for a project to transform a Kindergarten in Kalush into an IDP shelter. Kalush is a medium-sized city in the western region of Ivano-Frankivsk. Due to its relatively safe location, Kalush has been a magnet for people fleeing active war zones in eastern and southern Ukraine. All around the Kalush area, school classrooms and dormitories have been converted into living quarters by a myriad of NGOs, as well as by local governments.
The renovated facility now provides housing and services to 46 IDPs. Mariana has moved on from her position in the Kalush Mayor’s office to MoveUkraine, the organization she worked with to furnish the Kalush Kindergarten with beds. They are providing similar services nationwide. For more info on this project from MoveUkraine, click here.
