Grant Report: Berkshire Amistad in Honduras

Friday May 17, 2024

During our 2022 grant cycle, NorCalPCA gave $2,500 to Berkshire Amistad to fund maritime shipping expenses for medical equipment such as wheelchairs, crutches, and walkers from the U.S. to Honduras. This non-profit organization, headed by RPCVs Edward O’Toole (Honduras) and Kelley Feltmate O’Toole (Kenya), uses shipping containers that come to the U.S. filled with bananas to ship used medical equipment back to Honduras.

With our assistance, this year the organization delivered a half shipment of supplies to the Port of Delaware, which then went to Puerto de Cortez then onto Intibucá and Guaimaca. In total, 85 wheelchairs, 300 pairs of crutches, and 50 walkers were distributed to hundreds of patients and clinics. All equipment is ‘loaned’ to the patient with an agreement to return the equipment when no longer needed so that it can be used by other patients. Patients were invited to contribute to shipping costs, if they were able.

NorCalPCA’s Grants Program provides funds for community development projects all around the world. We encourage NorCal members to nominate a project you know well from your host country or other community where you have lived or worked. Grant amounts vary, but generally range from $1,000-$5,000. Want more info, have a project you are interested in nominating, or want to donate? Details on our Grants program, last year’s recipients, and how to apply can be found on our Grants page.
